Experience the color and range of wind band music in the UCO Wind Symphony’s “Impulse.”
The UCO School of Music presents the Wind Symphony in Concert, “Impulse,” at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 8, 2026, in Mitchell Hall Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 405-974-3375. UCO students receive one free ticket with a valid student ID.
The concert marks the beginning of a new chapter for the UCO Wind Symphony under the direction of Darby Cassaday, newly appointed Director of Bands. The program celebrates cornerstone works of the wind band repertoire while showcasing the ensemble’s range of sound, color and expression.
The program includes:
“Firefly” — Ryan George
Inspired by the composer’s young daughter imagining a firefly as Tinkerbell, this playful work captures the wonder of seeing something ordinary as something extraordinary.
“Second Suite in F” — Gustav Holst
A cornerstone of the wind band repertoire, Holst’s suite draws on traditional English folk songs and dances. The finale brings together “Dargason” and “Greensleeves.” Conducted by graduate conducting student Chase Dealy.
“Adoration” — Florence B. Price
Originally composed for organ, this lyrical work uses a warm, hymn-like melody to highlight the wind ensemble’s softer side through sustained color and expressive playing.
“Florentiner, Grande marcia italiana” — Julius Fučík
A grand and theatrical Italian march filled with brilliant fanfares, graceful melodies and a jubilant conclusion.
“Lux Aurumque” — Eric Whitacre
Meaning “Light and Gold,” this work features shimmering harmonies and luminous instrumental colors, moving from quiet reflection to radiant intensity.
“Armenian Dances, Part I” — Alfred Reed
A landmark of the wind band repertoire, this sweeping work transforms five Armenian folk songs into music that ranges from tender and lyrical to exuberant and rhythmically charged.
