PROGRAM
ACT I – The apartment of Gabriel and Rosalinda von Eisenstein
The home of Gabriel and Rosalinda von Eisenstein. Gabriel returns home to his wife after being sentenced to spend several days in jail because of his incompetent lawyer. Unbeknownst to Rosalinda, Gabriel’s friend Falke suggests that Gabriel goes to a party first and then to jail. Gabriel heartily agrees. The Eisensteins’ maid also has been invited to the same party and pretends her aunt is sick in order to get off from work. Meanwhile, Rosalinda’s old flame Alfred sings outside their home. Rosalinda tries to resist him, but after Eisenstein leaves for jail (by way of the party), she is unable to resist any longer. However, they are interrupted by Prison Warden Frank, who believes that Alfred is Gabriel and takes him to jail. Rosalinda receives an invitation to the same party and is asked to go as a Hungarian heiress.
15 Minute Intermission
ACT II – The lavish penthouse apartment of Prince Orlofsky
The home of Prince Orlofsky. The wealthy Orlofsky hosts a party and tells his guests to follow his motto: “chacun à son gout!” or “each to his own tastes.” Adele and Gabriel arrive disguised as an actress and a Frenchman respectively but recognize each other. To divert attention, Adele publicly states that she is clearly not a maid due to her high-class manner and appearance and everyone believes her. Frank arrives, also disguised as a Frenchman, and he and Gabriel become fast friends. When Rosalinda arrives masked and in disguise as well, Gabriel tries to seduce her with his chiming watch, but Rosalinda ends up with the watch instead and convinces everyone that she is truly Hungarian by singing the “melodies of her homeland”. All drink champagne and dance until 6 am, when Frank and Gabriel realize they need to be at the jail and leave in a hurry.
15 Minute Intermission
ACT III – A New York City prison run by Warden Frank
A New York City prison run by Warden Frank. Warden Frank arrives drunk to the jail and falls asleep on his desk. Adele and Ida arrive at the jail and Adele encourages Frank to help her with her acting career. Gabriel arrives to turn himself in, but Frank tells him that they thought he was already in a cell. Gabriel’s lawyer arrives to talk to his client, but Gabriel instead steals his clothes and disguises himself as the lawyer to meet his imposter. Alfred (who has been pretending to be Gabriel) meets with his lawyer (who is Gabriel in disguise) and Rosalinda. Finally, Gabriel reveals his true identity, only to be foiled by Rosalinda revealing that she was at the party the whole time. Chastened, he apologizes as Falke reveals it was all his plan to get back at Gabriel for leaving him drunk and alone in a bat costume after a costume party.
